Blood Moon Full Lunar Eclipse

Tonight on May 15, 2022, saw a full lunar eclipse that is described as “blood moon” because of the red color reflected. During an eclipse the moon, earth, and sun are fully aligned with the earth blocking the sun from the moon’s surface. Tonight’s eclipse caused only the red end of the spectrum to reach the moon giving it the red appearance. It is the only color with a light wavelength long enough to “get around” the Earth. The reason for this is due to the amount of dust or clouds in the earth’s atmosphere. Full lunar eclipses and especially “blood moon” eclipses are fairly rare events. Here are some photos of tonight’s blood moon eclipse.
